Job Description Summary

Our Deputy Head of Data will be responsible for building and leading a high-performance team of data engineers, scientist and analysts to define and implement the clients’ data strategy to support the digital transformation. Our Data team builds tools, infrastructure, and processes to scale-out Data handling in a self-service way, for technical and non-technical audiences. You will report to the Head of Data.

The role is accountable for leading all aspects of data engineering including distributed file storage system, data pipelines, data integration, data warehousing and data vizualization focusing on helping our clients design and implement digitally-enabled business and operating models of the future.

We believe that data is core to any such transformation.

As a senior leader, you should possess a good blend of theoretical and practical data analytics expertise, and be very well-versed in its application within high-impact transformational business and technology consulting engagements.

In a highly strategic and cross-functional role, the leader will possess a combination of structured strategic thinking, exceptional leadership and collaboration skills, strong analytical ability and a passion for new ideas.

You will play a key role in further shaping and contextualizing Mekong Big Data’s value proposition for the Cambodian and regional market.


  • Build & Lead Data Engineering Function

    • Understand both internal and external customer requirements and render those as architectural models that will operate at large scale and high-performance

    • Build and grow a customer centric data engineering group of diverse data engineers/technologists to drive design and implementation for transformational data initiatives

    Data Engineering Design & Implementation

    • Applies knowledge, leadership experience and be the data engineering thought leader to drive design and implement appropriate data architectures, infrastructure, data ingestion pipelines and enablement tools, processes, and controls to meet business needs and to help the data engineering team grow at scale

    • Accountable for driving design, execution and governance of significant projects that change customers’s organization

    • Technical ownership of modern data pipelines methodologies, big data and database storage management, and data restitution at scale including operational responsibilities for data usability, availability, efficiency, and cost management

    Team Leadership – In collaboration with the Head of Data you will :

    • Lead, inspire, coach, and develop our data team that is committed to service and quality outcomes

    • Enforce best practices and workflows that improve the use of data across the organization

    • Be an ambassador for our data-driven culture

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, data statistics, mathematics or related field.

  • 7+ years of in-depth knowledge and experience of leading data engineering teams at enterprise scale

  • Has significant track record of successfully defining data strategy & strong execution background with large scale data transformation

  • Experience in driving data strategy and leading technology transformation in the space including cloud data infrastructure, data lake and advanced analytics.

  • Must have experience with SQL and NoSQL database technologies

  • Experience with big data architectures and data modelling to efficiently process large volumes of data

  • Experience in ETL, data processing & data governance implementations to meet business goals

  • In-depth knowledge of technology industry trends/emerging technologies and ability to apply to strategic business needs.

  •  Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and verbal communication skills :

    • Great communication skills; able to present results to non-technical audience

    • Attention to detail. Be a detective to identify and fix database problems and data quality

    • Creativity in solving problems; think inside and outside the box to connect dots

    • Positive and can-do attitude yet humble; get excited about learnings and challenging work

    • Ability to abstract general principles from specifics
